ASSESSMENT OF SUSTAINABLE STREET LIGHTING FOR LEBANON

The present report reviews the street lighting designs available on the various Lebanese roads and provides recommendations for future designs based on road characteristics and usage in addition to a techno – financial appraisal of the various designs outlined. The report evaluates the various applied technologies – namely lamp types and energy sources – and the different design characteristics – to name a few: distances between poles, pole height, lamp height, control system, etc…

In terms of lamp technology, LED lamps provided a more energy efficient solution when compared to their counterparts High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Inductive lamps. In terms of energy source and control system, grid powered implementations with advanced control presented the most cost – effective solution followed by grid powered with basic control and PV power with advanced control.

The financial analysis completed for the energy efficient option compared to business as usual HPS shows a high internal rate of returns, with cases up to 50% - depending on operating hours, lamp power, dimming potential and other luminance requirements.
